8 Names Added to New York State Firefighters Memorial

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – The names of eight firefighters are being added to the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial at the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany.

The memorial, dedicated in 1998, honors the nearly 2,400 people who have died in the line of duty as professional or volunteer firefighters. The earliest name on the wall is from 1811.

The names being added Tuesday include Poughkeepsie firefighter Timothy Gunther, Liberty firefighter Fred Edwards, and Capt. David Smith of the Howells Fire Company in Orange County.

Others are Joseph Sanford Jr. of the Inwood Fire Department in Nassau County; Lt. Gordon Ambelas of the New York City Fire Department; Kevin Bristol of the Peekskill; Ross Huffer of Nesconset in Suffolk County; and Keven Townes Sr. of Mount Vernon in Westchester County.
