Bill Would Make Attacks on First Responders a Hate Crime

NYSPFFA President Sam Fresina and Secretary Treasurerr Jim McGowan took part in a news conference Monday, Jan. 30, hosted by Sen. Fred Akshar. IAFF 1st District VP James Slevin also attended.

The senator, along with Senators Patrick Gallivan and Martin Golden, as well as Assemblyman Peter Abbate, are advocating for a bill that would make any attack on a first responder a hate crime.

We all know the attack our police officers are under. They are being ambushed in the streets all across this country. And now some groups are calling for similar attacks on firefighters and EMS workers. It is beyond disturbing that first responders, whose job it is to protect and serve the public, would be the victim of violence by members of this very same public.

Thank you to Senators Akshar, Gallivan and Golden, and thank you to Assemblyman Abbate for pushing for the passage of this bill and for having our backs once again.
