“For many, their arrival on the scene of a fire, accident or hazardous spill
exposed them to unseen and unknown peril.”
Fire fighters from across the state gathered in Albany today to honor the lives of 126 New Yorkers whose names will be added to the Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial this year.
The memorial, located at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, recognizes line of duty deaths, including those incurring injury or illness during their careers serving the community, including those who responded in the aftermath of the attacks on United States on September 11, 2001.
Reflecting on the solemn day Sam Fresina, President of the New York State Professional Fire Fighters Association said: “The Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial represents all who have responded to the call to serve, knowing the risks they may encounter. For many, their arrival on the scene of a fire, accident or hazardous spill exposed them to unseen and unknown peril.
We must ensure that during each tour, fire fighters are provided with the proper protective equipment and apparatus to confront the challenges they face. That they are prepared and trained to counter extraordinary events and circumstances. And, that their health and well-being be assessed to minimize the impact of toxins, hazards and the toll upon their bodies endured during their careers.”
The Memorial contains 2,818 names. It was originally dedicated in 1998.
