What is it?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Monkeypox is a viral infectio<\/span>n that causes symptoms similar to those seen in smallpox patients.1<\/sup><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The virus belongs to the\u00a0<\/span>Or<\/span>thopoxvirus<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span>genus, which also includes the virus that causes s<\/span>mallpox and the\u00a0<\/span>Poxviridae\u00a0<\/span><\/em>family<\/span>.2<\/sup><\/span><\/span>\u00a0Human monkeypox was first identified in 1970,\u00a0<\/span>and primarily occurs in central and west Africa<\/span>, where it is considered endemic<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The first monkeypox outbreak outside of Africa\u00a0<\/span>occurred in 2003, and led to over 70 cases of the virus in the U.S.3<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Have there been any cases reported in the U.S. and\/or Canada?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In May 2022, monkeypox were identified in several\u00a0<\/span>countries<\/span>\u00a0where monkeypox is not commonly found<\/span>, including\u00a0<\/span>over\u00a0<\/span>500\u00a0<\/span>confirmed cases in the U.S.<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>over\u00a0<\/span>350 in Canada<\/span>\u00a0as of Ju<\/span>ly<\/span>\u00a02022.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Research is ongoing to understand\u00a0<\/span>the cause of this recent outbreak<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
